The Department of Commerce publishes thousands of reports, guides and data sets that are very useful to anyone in the marketing and advertising industries. Unfortunately, since the DOC is prohibited by law from advertising about its products in anything but DOC publications, most business professionals have never heard of them. We hope to change that.

ZIP Code Business Patterns presents data on the total number of
establishments, employment and payroll for more than 40,000 ZIP Code areas
nationwide. In addition, the number of establishments for nine
employment-size categories is provided by detailed industry for each ZIP
Code.
Most ZIP Codes are derived from the physical location address reported
in Census Bureau programs. The Internal Revenue Service provides
supplemental address information. Those employers without a fixed location
or with an unknown ZIP Code are included under an "Unclassified" category
indicated by ZIP Code 99999.
This is a good place to go for quick information about states and counties. Much more detailed information is availble on a county by county basis through the county menu, and at the state level through the "Browse more data sets for (State)" selection over the right column.

City and County Data Book 2007
The City and County Data Book 2007 Brings together a variety of social and economic data for the United States, regions, divisions, states, counties, incorporated cities of 25,000 or more, and places (and, in 20 states, minor civil divisions) of 2,500 or more from the Census Bureau and other sources. Tables cover population, age, money and personal income, and education, as well as housing ownership and value. The report also includes births, deaths, poverty, local government finance and employment, health care, and human services. In addition, tables show data on business, banking, climate, elections, and social programs. Several new data items appear for the first time including, for counties, postcensal estimates of age, race, and sex and households, as well as valuation of nonresidential construction authorized for building permits. New for cities are typical commercial electric bills and federal procurement contract awards.

The State And Metropolitan Area Data Book 2006
[Excel files]
features census population data for all areas covered,
which include the United States, individual states, and metropolitan areas
and their component counties and central cities. The report also features
census age, race, Hispanic origin, household, and housing counts, as well
as data from the economic censuses and continuing demographic and economic
surveys. This report also includes many data series from other governmental
and private agencies. Tables cover a wide range of demographic and economic
topics, such as crime, personal income, poverty, unemployment, traffic
fatalities, banking, export sales, and foreign investments.

The Census 2000 Website is now featuring data downloads for individual states. Downloads are available in a variety of formats, including text, Word, Acrobat, and Excel formats.
