GET MORE WORK DONE ... AND STAY SANE

By Holly Wagstaff-Bellomo, The Gene Pool, Inc.

Another important deadline is looming, your head is on the chopping block if your project isn't complete, your staff is operating at full tilt and one more hot, hot project will send someone over the top. Your options- run far, far away (looking for employment on a warm beach), stay until midnight for next 2 weeks, ask what's left of your staff to join you on the midnight rampage or simply...OUTSOURCE.

Outsourcing is an option many firms and agencies have come to rely on in today's fast paced business climate. It allows internal departments to be nimble and accommodating with limited staff and time. It also allows companies to execute projects that are beyond their normal scope of services.

How does outsourcing work? When looking to outside contractors for assistance it is imperative that flexibility is the name of the game. There is talent out there who are not only willing but eager to help you. There are three "typical" outsourcing arrangements-
1) Project-based, off-site execution. Whether it be a media plan, graphic design of a brochure, campaign concepts, a press release, web design; the contractor comes to you, discusses the scope of the project, submits a cost estimate/timing and once approved, executes the projects and submits the deliverable.
2) Project-based, on-site. The contractor executes a finite project (i.e. presentation formatting, web updating, media buy reconciliation) at your location on a pre-determined timetable and rate.
3) Temporary on-site. This helps companies cover maternity leaves, sick time and pre-planned vacations. As well as, covering crunch times when big projects need to get out the door on time.

Outsourcing provides a viable option to common problems. Think of it in terms of both economy and productivity. It is proven that outsourcing is an economical option particularly when departments are running very lean. It is the fastest way to staff a large project without dealing with a new hire and the trouble of taxes, insurance, vacation, perks, etc. that go along with it. You pay for the services you need, when you need them. Outsourcing allows you to manage the productivity of staff members without overburdening individuals or teams.

Caveats of outsourcing- Chemistry...a right match is important when you are entrusting company and/or client information to an outside source. Be sure that the individuals are as capable as they seem on paper and that others who have worked with them will vouch for their professionalism. The heat of a tight deadline is not the time to find out that skills or personality are not a good fit for your company.
